Message from the DC Public Education Fund Executive Director on the Resignation of Chancellor Rhee

October 13, 2010- Today Chairman Gray and Chancellor Rhee announced their mutual decision that Chancellor Rhee will step down as Chancellor of DC Public Schools.  Deputy Chancellor Kaya Henderson will be named Acting Chancellor. Chairman Gray has invited Chancellor Rhee’s senior staff to stay on and continue the important work they began three years ago, indicating his commitment to continued and uninterrupted reform.

I am confident that with Kaya Henderson at the helm, the growing force of highly effective educators in the schools, and a smart and supportive community, we will continue to keep things moving in the right direction for the kids of Washington, DC.

I hope to see you in a few weeks at the first annual Standing Ovation for DC Teachers. Together we can let our teachers and community know that effective teaching and high student achievement continue to be a priority for all of us, and that we will continue to honor them far into the future.

Congratulations to DCPS' Highly Effective Educators

September 16, 2010— Last Friday marked a momentous day for DC Public School Teachers. The day began with an announcement of IMPACT plus, DCPS’ new performance-based compensation system which outlines new bonus structures under IMPACT, DCPS’ evaluation system. Under the new system, teachers who consistently produce results will become among the highest paid educators in the country, with a possible annual salary of more than $130,000 after nine years (compared to about $87,500 after 21 years under the prior system). DC Public Education is thrilled to help fund the majority of the bonus system with the generous support of four national foundations.

On Friday, DCPS also issued an unprecedented $45 million in retroactive pay increases to teachers across the city, fulfilling its promise to reward teachers who work hard and raise student achievement.

Timed to coincide with the excitement, DCPS hosted its first annual reception to celebrate highly effective educators in Union Station. Highly effective educators were celebrated and acknowledged, and enjoyed student performances from Miner Elementary Glee Club and School Without Walls Rock Band. DC Public Education Fund was thrilled to underwrite the event with support from local donors.

DC Public Education Fund would like to extend its sincere congratulations and thanks to all high effective educators and wishes them the best for the coming school year. We look forward to seeing each of them at A Standing Ovation for DC Teachers on November 1st at the Kennedy Center.

Statement from the DC Public Education Fund Executive Director on the Mayoral Primary

September 15, 2010— Over the past three years, DC Public Education Fund has been proud to play a role in supporting and investing in our city’s public education transformation to ensure there are great teachers in every classroom, effective schools for every student, and a system where everyone is accountable to students, parents, and taxpayers.

Local and national funders have recognized the unprecedented momentum for improvement here in DC and have generously provided substantial support – nearly $80 million has been committed to date.  The federal government has also recognized the boldness of our reform plan by awarding DC a $75 million Race to the Top grant.

We look forward to working with the next mayor and with our funders to build upon the progress that has been made and to keep students front and center in DC education reform.
