Dear Friends,
Great teachers are the unsung heroes of our country. They spend hours with our children, nurturing their minds and exposing them to new ideas, so that one day, they can pursue their dreams. However, too often, we fail to recognize teachers’ important contributions, which is why I am delighted to participate in this year’s A Standing Ovation for DC Teachers.
Growing up, my family really valued education. For my first few years, I was home-schooled by my mother and later I attended public school, where I benefitted from some incredible teachers who took an interest in and believed in me.
I specifically remember my high school English teacher, Mrs. Bodey. She thought I had potential and made a point to encourage me to be my
best. She was the kind of teacher whose encouragement made me want to make her proud. I write songs for a living now, but I didn’t believe that writing was one of my strengths until I spent a year with Mrs. Bodey. She gave me the courage to believe that I could write with creativity, passion, and clarity. I wouldn’t be who I am today without her.
There are many Mrs. Bodeys throughout DC Public Schools and these great teachers deserve more than one special day of recognition. It should be a year-round effort. I chose to participate in Standing Ovation because it is the kind of community event that should always take place throughout our country. Our teachers deserve to be supported, celebrated and thanked for their time, dedication and vision.
I very much look forward to participating in this year’s A Standing Ovation for DC Teachers, and I hope that you will join this vibrant celebration to show your support for great DC Public School Teachers.
Sincerely,
